![]() ![]() How did you navigate the impact these various things might have had on her? There’s nothing wrong with that, but I think we also have to be very willing to go easy on ourselves and be willing to allow for shift and changes in that.īefore the book even begins, Ramona and her family have been through a lot because of Hurricane Katrina and then her mom leaving. ![]() So I wanted to write a book about that shift in identity and how we take such great comfort in our labels. It was this really happy time in my life and honeymoon period in my marriage when I should’ve been really thrilled, but I was having to come to terms with this shift in identity because I would never, for as long as we’re married, experience that feeling of walking into a restaurant and holding hands with a girl, and for people to just identify me as queer. I’ve always dated both guys and girls, and when I married my husband, I experienced this really weird thing that I didn’t expect to experience in that I kind of felt like I wasn’t straight enough for all the straight community and I wasn’t gay enough anymore for the queer community. I’ve always been bisexual or pansexual or queer or whatever label you want to put on it. But I felt a lot more tied to this book in a really personal ways that people can’t see just by looking at you. People can look at me and make assumptions about how I might relate to that book. My second book, Dumplin’, is about me in very obvious ways. You’ve said this is a more personal story for you. ![]()

Steinbeck establishes the enemy nation as one that is intent upon wearing a veneer of civility that does not really exist underneath in fact, it is an occupying force that is the very opposite of civilized. However, it is also a story about civility, the importance of it, and its usefulness as a weapon of stealth and propaganda. The fact that the two men are government officials is very significant, and a sign of things to come, as it shows how little power the authorities have to prevent the enemy from taking over. ![]() The Moon Is Downis a story about conquest, and it is immediately established as such as the policeman and the mailman watch helplessly as the unwelcome invaders take over their small, peaceful town. But in the last few years I’ve seen science fiction writers adopt the thriller style in their recent work - work that their publishers are explicitly labelling and marketing as science fiction and as thrillers. Plenty of science fiction writers have been writing thrillers, techno and otherwise, on the side, but the SF field has by and large not paid much attention to them. Science fiction and thrillers (more specifically, “ technothrillers” - gadget-heavy thrillers set in the near future) have coexisted for decades, but have largely existed on separate planes. The “thriller mode” is a good way to begin our look at Madeline Ashby’s third and latest novel, Company Town. Lately I’ve been noticing that thriller tropes and sensibilities are turning up more and more in the science fiction field. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hilda’s dilemmas, while fantastic, also feel real Pearson has found a lovely new way to dramatize childhood demons, while also making you long for your own cruise down the fjords." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() White power's embrace of Paganism was on full display at the tragic Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. Similar groups have adopted Odinist phrases like "Faith, Family, and Folk." And while the Third Reich did embrace the Othala rune in their time, the symbol is far less inflammatory or recognizable than the Swastika in the United States, enabling these groups to fly under the radar. ![]() Today, one of the largest white nationalist organizations in the US, the National Socialist Movement, has traded in their Swastikas and Totenkopfs for Pagan symbols like the Othala rune. For racists, the faith and its offshoots serve as both a cover and a recruiting tool. But with the recent rise of right-wing extremism in America, we've seen a co-mingling of racism and Paganism that has alarmed experts, activists, and Pagans themselves. Although the leaders of Nazi Germany were obsessed with Paganism and the occult, it has largely been associated with multiculturalism here in the United States. ![]() |
